When it comes to small changes that make a big impact, these custom DIY closet doors prove how powerful thoughtful design can be. I recently upgraded a plain closet with a bold yet natural look—and the transformation instantly elevated the room. This is my version of “imperfectly perfect” and I love it !!

Why Change the Doors?
The original closet doors were functional but uninspiring. I wanted something that would bring character into the space of our bedroom while complementing the mix of traditional and modern elements in the room. Rather than replace the entire structure, I decided to customize the doors myself.

The Materials I Used
• Paint: An espresso bean black shade for the frames- making this both modern and dramatic. I actually used a Matte finish and not eggshell.

• Panels: I used a roll of leftover, burlap then I placed the wood panels over it . This adds warmth and texture, softening the bold lines of the brown paint.

• Hardware: Sleek bronze handles for a touch of elegance and continuity with nearby furniture. The look of my bedroom is moody but also very soft feels.

• Basic tools: Paintbrushes, a staple gun, scissors, painter’s tape, measuring tape and a miter saw box .
The Process
1. Prep the Doors: I gave them a light sanding to smooth the surface and removed the old wood knobs. It’s all in the details and the prep work !

2. Paint the Frame: Using painter’s tape, I masked off the surrounding area and painted the doors. Then I primed and painted the wood panels/trim.

3. Add the Fabric Panels: After the paint dried, I cut and attached the burlap to the frame using a staple gun, making sure it was taut and evenly placed.

4. Install Hardware: I selected long, vertical pulls that added both function and visual height. Very sleek and sturdy too !

The Result
The finished doors strike a perfect balance between modern minimalism and earthy warmth. The contrast between the dark frame and light burlap panels gives the room depth, while the texture brings in a cozy, organic feel. Best of all? It’s completely one-of-a-kind.
Would I Do It Again?
Absolutely. This project is proof that with a little creativity and a few supplies, you can completely transform your space. Whether you’re working with a tight budget or just want a weekend DIY, custom closet doors are a satisfying upgrade.
